The first year of Polygon’s Game of the Year awards was a big one for a variety of reasons.
It was the first time in nearly 20 years that the award was given to a game by a non-video game publisher.
It marked the start of a new era for game journalism and helped solidify the position of the video game industry as a legitimate media outlet.
It also marked the beginning of the end of the console wars.
While the next generation of consoles are still being released, the industry is shifting to mobile and VR, and gaming is starting to become a much bigger part of people’s lives.
The first-ever awards show, Game of The Year, was held on February 6, 2020 and brought together some of the best games released in 2016, with a wide variety of different categories ranging from platform exclusives to blockbuster indie titles.
Here are our picks for the best of 2016, based on the nominees’ individual accomplishments.
